Getting my Garage organized for the Holiday Season

Every year you say you're going to get organized. Make this the year that it actually happens.

The holiday season is busy. Filled with children's plays, baking, shopping and decorating, our days can quickly get away from us. Before you switch into "holiday high gear," how about getting your garage organized. It will be the best holiday gift you could give yourself.

Imagine having the ability to quickly and easily locate all of your holiday lights, ornaments, wrapping paper and yard decorations. Wouldn't it be nice to have all of your totes neatly packed and clearly labeled? It may sound like a foreign world right now, but with a little work you'll be able to quickly access everything you need.

With the Monkey Bar storage system you'll be well on your way to holiday success. Once we've installed your shelving and racks, all you'll need to do is organize, pack and label.

Best Method

The best way to organize and store your holiday items is of course to begin by sorting according to the particular holiday. If you have some of your Halloween decorations in your bedroom closet and the rest of them in the garage, this is a good place to start.

First gather ALL of your holiday decorations into one area. This means Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween and even birthday decor. Once it's all together you'll be able to sort through and decide what stays and what needs to hit the trash bin. If you've over-packed boxes in the past, there's a good chance that some of your decorations are broken. If they can't be repaired, throw them away.

Next, label your bins according to holiday. If you have small children you may want to draw a pumpkin on the Halloween box and a pine tree on the Christmas decorations. This will include your little ones and teach them about keeping items neatly organized.

If you own a lot of Christmas decorations, divide the storage bins so you keep the indoor decorations separate from the outdoor lights and yard ornaments. This will come in handy when it comes time to decorate.

Test the lights before storing, so you won't have to do this later and pack ornaments in boxes that have bulb dividers to prevent breakage. Always opt of sturdy plastic totes when looking for storage containers. Cardboard boxes may seem fine on moving day, but for long term storage they tend to wilt and fall apart when exposed to the elements.

Labeling

When labeling the holiday storage bins, be specific. Remember, the way you label is going to save time in the long run. A tote that is labeled, "Christmas tree ornaments, tinsel and tree topper" is much better than just "Christmas." Store extra wrapping paper in the same bin with bows and your "to and from" tags. Label that tote "Christmas wrapping supplies."

It may seem like a lot of extra work right now, but once you are finished, you'll enjoy organized and stress free holidays for years to come!
